What Are Adderall and Ritalin?

Both Ritalin and Adderall are central nervous system stimulants used to treat ADHD. In the United States, immediate-release Ritalin and Adderall are FDA-approved for ADHD and narcolepsy, while extended-release products such as Ritalin LA and Adderall XR are approved for ADHD. Health Canada also authorizes certain methylphenidate products, including Ritalin and Ritalin SR, to treat narcolepsy.

Neither is an ordinary over-the-counter medication. Doctors prescribe Ritalin and Adderall only after evaluating the condition being treated, such as ADHD or, for certain formulations, narcolepsy.

Ritalin and Methylphenidate Hydrochloride

Ritalin is made of methylphenidate, while Adderall contains amphetamine salts. Methylphenidate hydrochloride blocks the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine, leaving more of those brain chemicals available between brain cells.

Ritalin is available in immediate-release and extended-release forms, although specific products such as Ritalin SR or Ritalin LA vary by country.
